John Stewart is currently Acting Director of Specialised Commissioning at NHS England with overall responsibility for the £17bn portfolio of specialised services spanning 150 clinical areas. He also provides national director level oversight to three other direct commissioning functions of NHS England - Health & Justice, Armed Forces and Sexual Assault Services commissioning.

John joined NHS England in 2013 when he took up the role of Director of Clinical Policy & Quality Strategy, working alongside the then National Medical Director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh. Prior to this, he was a civil servant, holding a diverse range of senior roles in the Department of Health and the Cabinet Office.
